Andy Garcia stars as the late Italian artist, Amedeo Modigliani, in this biographical drama. The film focuses on the painter’s final years, his obsessive love of the young and beautiful Jeanne, and his rivalry with Pablo Picasso. When Jeanne has his child out of wedlock, her rigid Catholic parents threaten to send the baby to a convent unless Jeanne makes a clean break from the Jewish painter. In spite of Modigliani’s poverty and drug abuse, Jeanne chooses to stay with the impetuous artist, in the hopes they will find a way to rescue and raise their child together. A solution presents itself in the form of Paris' annual art competition, which would provide prize money and a guaranteed career to the winner. Neither Modigliani, nor his friend/rival Picasso has ever entered the competition, believing that it is beneath true artists like themselves. However, when a desperate Modigliani signs up for the competition, Picasso follows suit, setting off a wave of excitement in Paris. With the welfare of his family on the line, Modigliani tackles this work with the hopes of creating a masterpiece, knowing that all the artists of Paris are doing the same.
