The '62 Storm
7:00 PM Friday, May 23, 2008

For anyone who has not yet had a chance to see this astounding locally-filmed documentary, this may be your last chance!

The ’62 Storm describes the damage made by the powerful winter nor’easter that struck the Atlantic coast in March, 1962. During a period of three days, whole communities were flooded and destroyed, and lives were lost. Using archival photos, home movies, and interviews with those who survived, The ’62 Storm re-lives Delaware’s greatest 20th century disaster, the weather events that spawned it and reflects on the possibility of a similar storm occurring along the Delaware coast in the near future. [2007, Runtime: 56 minutes, Not rated]

Paris, Je T'aime
7:00 PM Friday, June 27, 2008

Celebrated directors from around the world, including the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, and Gurinder Chadha, have come together to portray Paris in a way never before imagined in this film. With each director telling the story of an unusual encounter in one of the city’s neighborhoods, the vignettes go beyond the postcard view of Paris to portray aspects of the city rarely seen on the big screen. Performances from an outstanding host of actors including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Nick Nolte, Gena Rowlands, and Steve Buscemi, add even deeper resonance to this affectionate love letter to one of the world’s most transcendent cities. A few of the witty and serendipitous narratives in the film include; a tale of racial tensions and paranoid visions of the city as seen from the perspective of an American tourist; the sad story of a young foreign worker comparing her own domestic situation to her employer’s bourgeois environs; the trials of a young American starlet shooting a movie; and an examination of a father grappling with his complex relationship with his daughter. [2006, Runtime: 120 min., Rated R]

Following the screening, Dr. David Johnson will discuss the blend of distinctive filmmaking styles on display in Paris, Je T’aime. Dr. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of English at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland, where he has taught courses in film since 2004.  He is also the Co-Editor of Literature/Film Quarterly, a scholarly journal in its thirty-sixth year of publication.
