JACK LEWIS WATERCOLOR:
THE TOW TRUCK

Born in Baltimore in 1912, Jack Lewis came to Delaware in 1936 to join a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) camp to document its activities. He spent 60 years living in Bridgeville in Sussex County, painting local scenes throughout much of the state and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Murals painted by Lewis celebrating the bi-centennial of Delaware’s ratification of the Constitution are in Legislative Hall in Dover, and his works in various media can be found in collections, both public and private, throughout the state and region. He was among the founders of the Rehoboth Art League and taught classes there for many years. His death in 2012, just short of his 100th birthday, was commemorated by a major retrospective of his work at the Art League. He was celebrated at the event for the legacy he has left in Delaware, not only in his artwork but in the many artists he influenced. Governor Jack Markell also presented Lewis with the Order of the First State — the highest honor for meritorious service the governor can grant — in 2010. Jack Lewis paintings are much sought after. This painting was a generous donation from the private collection of a Film Society supporter.
